An Effingham County infant remains in a Savannah hospital in critical condition and on life support, according to authorities.

The 8-month-old child was rushed to Memorial Health University Center last Thursday afternoon, and Effingham County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man and charged him in the case.

ECSO investigators took Jonathan Oliver, 19, into custody at Memorial Health University Medical Center late Thursday evening. Oliver has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in the first degree. He remains in Effingham County jail without bond.

According to sheriff’s reports, deputies responded to a home on Little McCall Road around 1:30 Thursday afternoon on a report of a child not breathing who had possibly drowned.

The child’s mother was not home at the time, according to investigators.

Deputies and emergency personnel on the scene administered CPR, and the child was taken to Effingham Hospital before being airlifted to Memorial.
