Two teenagers were arrested Saturday morning after stealing a truck and leading Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase.

According to Effingham County Sheriff’s Office reports, deputies responded to a home in the Castlewood subdivision off Courthouse Road, shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday, on a report that a vehicle had been stolen. As a deputy was taking the report, he observed the stolen truck being driven in the area. Two deputies got behind the suspect vehicle, which fled at a high rate of speed.

The pursuit went down Courthouse Road and ontoHighway 17. One of the deputies attempted a PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver on Highway 17 but was unsuccessful as the suspect swerved and hit the brakes. At that point, a sheriff’s patrol car collided with the suspects’ truck, causing moderate damage, but the suspects continued driving southbound.

The suspects eventually pulled over near Jabez Jones Road, where they were taken into custody. The 16-year-old driver, who is currently on probation for stealing a car several months ago, was charged with theft by taking (motor vehicle), felony fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, possession of marijuana, possession of drug-related objects and several other traffic charges.

The 15-year-old passenger was charged with theft by receiving stolen property and possession of drug-related objects.

The driver is currently being held in the Chatham County Youth Detention Center.
