Jeff Kublin announced his candidacy for a seat on Rincon’s city council last week. He is the only challenger to the incumbents so far.

Kublin, the co-owner of Inter Web Designs and 11-year resident of the city, is making his third run for public service. He previously ran in the 2000-2001 elections.

Councilman Lamar Crosby, who is not running for re-election, supports his bid. He and Kublin have known each other since around 1996. The two men also serve in the Rotary Club together.

“I’ve just found him to be a very concerned citizen,” Crosby said of his support of Kublin. “He’s a good guy and a good person to be on the city council.”

Crosby also believes that Kublin’s business background would be an asset to the council.

The theme of Kublin’s campaign is “Keep Moving Forward.” He explained that he wants the city to progress without losing its quality of life. His goal is to “manage, not control growth.”

A major area of concern for him is the traffic congestion along Highway 21. He cited two options to the dilemma — public transportation and alternative routes.

“I think we have to take a look at public transportation,” Kublin said.

This option, he elaborated, would both reduce the number of cars on the main roadway and provide transportation to those who lack it.

He also wants to enhance the cultural and recreational outlets in the small town. Bringing more and better restaurants is especially important. He said he hears a lot of people decrying the limited selection.

The Boston native describes his leadership style as reasoned.

“I think most everything I do is based on reason and logic,” he said.

Kublin cited his extensive leadership experience. He is the assistant district governor for the Rotary Club and served as president for 2003-2004. He was also a former president of the local Optimist Club and is now an ambassador with the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.

He plans to qualify later this week. Incumbent Reese Browher has indicated he will run again but Councilman Paul Wendelken is still undecided. All of them have until Friday to qualify for the November election.
