Effingham Hospital is pleased to announce that a new primary care practice will be established in Springfield soon.

Dr. James R. Cornwell Jr., the newest addition to Effingham Hospital, is coming to Effingham and will be opening his new medical practice in Springfield on Nov. 5. Dr. Cornwell will be available to start receiving patients immediately.

Dr. James Cornwell is a unique physician who comes to Effingham Hospital from Douglasville. He was born and raised in Austell.

Dr. Cornwell’s wife, Cheryl, is a registered nurse, and they have two children — Amy, 21, and David, 13.  

Dr. Cornwell began his health care career as a certified emergency medical technician. He went on to become a certified respiratory therapy technician, Georgia certified cardiac technician and registered respiratory therapist.

He later received his Bachelor of Science and masters in biology, prior to receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from Mercer School of Medicine in Macon.

Dr. Cornwell completed his residency training at the Floyd Medical Center, Rome Family Practice Residency Program and is board certified in family practice. Since 2003, Dr. Cornwell has been employed by WellStar Physicians Group in Powder Springs.

He is a family man with interests in photography, scuba diving, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and Tae kwon do.

He is a Civil War enthusiast and is also a private pilot.

Dr. Cornwell’s volunteer service includes being a tactical physician with the Powder Springs Police Department, Sunday school teacher and medical missionary, and he has a great interest in the Boy Scouts of America program.
