Georgia Southern is set to host a Night of Champions at the football season opener against Savannah State on Aug. 31 at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.

Night of Champions will recognize former Georgia Southern teams and partner them with current student-athletes and conference championship teams from the 2012-13 season.

The Georgia Southern football team will be recognized for winning its second consecutive Southern Conference championship, along with the 1993 team, who won the Eagles’ first SoCon title.

The 1993 team went 9-2 and finished in the top-10 in school history for scoring defense and rushing offense.

Night of Champions will also honor the 2012 women’s soccer team, the 2012 volleyball team and the 2013 Georgia Southern softball team, who all won SoCon championships last season. Last year’s softball team will be partnered with the 1996 softball team, who won Georgia Southern’s first softball SoCon championship.

The 2012 Georgia Southern women’s soccer team, who won the program’s first SoCon championship, will be joined by the program’s first-ever team, the 1993 women’s soccer squad.

The 2003 volleyball team, who won 19 straight matches en route to SoCon regular season and tournament titles, also will be honored.

All former student-athletes who played on any of the teams being honored can reserve a complimentary ticket to the Night of Champions event by contacting Matthew Herman at (912) 478-1500 or GSUNightOfChampions@gmail.com.

Kickoff for the season opener against the Tigers is set for 6 p.m. and the ceremony will take place during halftime. Season tickets for the 2013 season are still on sale by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS or by going online to gseagles.com.
