Resilient Rebels skin Panthers, advance to Sweet 16

SPRINGFIELD -- The Effingham County Rebels advanced to the Class AAAAAA Sweet 16 by sweeping Lakeside-Evans in a best-of-three series at Rebel Field on Wednesday.

Game 1 was a thrilling contest as the Rebels eked out a 4-3 win in eight innings. Chase Howze was credited with driving in the decisive run after he was hit by a bases-loaded pitch. JR Lonon tallied the run, setting off a wild celebration on the field.

The Rebels, who struggled against Georgia-bound pitcher Will Childers in the opener, had a much easier time in Game 2, notching an 11-5 decision.

Effingham County will host Valdosta for another best-of-three series starting May 2.
