Guyton’s city council held a special called meeting Monday morning to dispose of property and purchase additional property.

The city is trying to get rid of a number of miscellaneous items that they no longer need. These include everything from weed eaters to Ford Crown Victorias.

“It was bought years ago,” Councilman Phillip King said of the merchandise.

Some of it is in poor condition and others the city just no longer needs.

City clerk Debra Scruggs will publish an ad for the property. Anyone from the public will be able to bid on the items, King said.

The city council also decided to make an offer on the buildings belonging to Zipperer TV Sales and Repair, which is next door to city hall on Central Avenue.

They agreed to offer $200,000 for the property.

“We knew it was coming up for sale,” King said.

Fred Zipperer, the proprietor, has owned and operated the business for 37 years and has decided to retire.

The business comprises two buildings, one in front with 1,070 square feet and one in the back with between 400-600 square feet, according to Zipperer. The two structures are separated by about six feet.

He decided to give City Hall the first shot at purchasing the property because of its proximity and impending growth.
“I just thought they needed it the most,” Zipperer explained.

He noted that his building would provide additional space for meetings and that his property would provide more area for parking.

King agreed that the space would be good for city hall in light of impending growth. He feels that purchasing the buildings is one way to prepare for the city’s future.

So far, Zipperer has received two offers on his property.

“We haven’t really publicized that much,” he admitted.
