Springfield Fire Chief Edwin Rahn Jr. showed the Springfield City Council the fire department’s new truck Tuesday night.

The fire department received the truck on May 29. The Southside Fire Department in Savannah donated the truck to the Springfield Fire Department.

“We’ve been working on trucks a lot,” Rahn said. “You know we’ve been trying to save money as best as we can.”

He said the truck that was donated was a truck that was being retired from the Southside department.

Rahn told the council the members of the fire department are going through training and classes.

“We’ve got four firefighters at the county training to become certified firefighters,” he said. “This will allow them to fight fire anywhere in the nation.”

A former junior firefighter, who joined while she was a senior in high school, is getting ready to go to medical school.

“She is in the class and doing very well,” Rahn said. “We’re super proud of her. The whole gang is doing a phenomenal job.”

Rahn said he will also be attending a class in November for fire investigation, and Assistant Chief James Derryberry will be going to arson school.

“Things are going along,” he said. “We’re trying to make sure we do it not too fast so we don’t over run ourselves.”
