Armstrong Atlantic State University freshman shortstop Alexis Mercer has been named the Peach Belt Conference’s softball Freshman of the Week, announced Tuesday by league officials.

Mercer had an outstanding weekend for Armstrong at the Saint Leo Invitational, hitting .615 and slugging .923 as the No. 21-ranked Pirates went 3-1 during the tournament. She went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and four RBIs in the Pirates’ 8-0 win over Lindenwood (Mo.), then went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in a 12-9 win over Pittsburg State.

The Rincon native and former South Effingham High School star finished the weekend with a 2-for-4 day with an RBI double in a 3-2 win over Saint Leo. Mercer is fourth in the conference with 13 RBIs and seventh in doubles.

Mercer is the first Freshman of the Week honoree for Armstrong since March 10, 2010.
