Nick Brant, a senior at Effingham County High School, broke the school’s bench press record on Sept. 28, pressing 460 pounds.

Brant broke Paul Connely’s 15-year-old record.

Brant is an offensive lineman and a captain for the Rebels’ football team. He broke the record during Buddy Holder’s 8:30 a.m. weightlifting class.

“He has a really good work ethic as far as setting goals and working to achieve them,” Holder said. “He works out with more weight than what our No. 2 guy maxes.”

Holder said Brant’s brute strength is an extension of his hard work.

“Everything he does in here (weight room) is an extension of the kind of person he is and the kind of person his mom and dad raised,” Holder said. “You see it on the football field and in the classroom. He’s always trying to improve himself.”
