Light is a powerful force in the universe.
Aiming to spread the word about the wonders of light, the United Nations declared 2015 the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. The initiative focuses on promoting awareness of the scientific role light plays in tackling problems connected to energy, education, agriculture and health.
One of the organizations supporting the movement is NASAs Chandra X-Ray Observatory, which has telescopes that capture various types of light to create more complete images of objects in space. A series of six images released by the observatory in celebration of the International Year of Light, plus some old favorites, can be viewed in the photo gallery.
