The Georgia Power Foundation is donating $5,000 to the United Way of the Coastal Empire to be administered to Effingham County residents affected by the March 15 tornadoes.

“We are part of this community, too,” said Craig Barrs, vice president of Georgia Power’s coastal region. “We want to help our neighbors through this very difficult time.”

The company recently contributed to both the United Way and the disaster services division of the Red Cross for victims of the Imperial Sugar disaster.

These funds will be used to assist families with emergency expenses in relation to the devastation caused by the tornadoes.

To apply for these funds, contact the United Way-Effingham Service Center at 826-5300 or call the United Way of the Coastal Empire’s 2-1-1.

The application process will end April 24.

Donations to the fund can be made at either First Effingham Bank location in Springfield or Rincon. For more information, call Bonnie Dixon or Lorraine Harris at 826-5300.
