SPRINGFIELD — The Metter Tigers (1-2) pounced in the opening inning but flounced in the others against Effingham County (2-0) on Tuesday.
After jumping to a 3-0 lead during their initial at-bat by capitalizing on three singles and a walk, the Tigers were tamed by Josh Bassett. The big right-hander allowed only one hit over the next four 4 2/3 frames before relinquishing the mound to Zach Garcia in the Rebels’ 7-3 victory.
Bassett posted eight strikeouts.
Chapman Bennett had a three-RBI hit for Effingham County, Timmy Burnsed added two hits and an RBI. He and Tucker Wilson scored twice.
The Rebels had six hits as a team.
The Tigers are set to host the Rebels Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
