EVANS -- Effingham County gave No. 4 Evans a major scare Wednesday night, taking a 14-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but fell short 67-64 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state tournament.
The Rebels finished their season with an 18-8 record.
Khiry Wallace sank five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points. Keion Wallace added 18.
ECHS went on an 11-2 during the final 1:51 of the first quarter, closing with Khiry Wallace's 3-pointer just before the buzzer, and took a 23-16 lead against the hosts. The Knights rallied to pull back in front 31-30 at halftime.
But the Rebels opened the third quarter on 13-2 spurt to see-saw back ahead 43-33.
ECHS had its biggest lead, 14, 56-42, when Khiry Wallace sank a three with 5:48 left.
But Evans held the Rebels to one field goal the rest of the way while ending the game on a 25-8 spurt. The Knights made four of their 11 3-pointers during their decisive run.
