LaMeisha Kelly, the city planner for the city of Rincon, will be the grand marshal for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.

The parade will be held Jan. 18, beginning at 10 a.m., in Springfield and it will follow the annual observance breakfast. The breakfast will be held at the county administrative complex beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“I definitely am honored,” Kelly said of being chosen grand marshal. “I am surprised. It’s usually people who I regard have done great things in the community. I feel like I’m just starting out.”

Kelly also is a member of the Effingham Hospital Authority, the Rincon Noon Lions Club, the United Way of the Coastal Empire, the Effingham College and Career Academy board, the Savannah State MSUSP advisory board, the Georgia Southern University MPA advisory board and the Georgia Association of Zoning Administrators.

“It’s an honor to be recognized any time you provide service in the community, but definitely to be named the grand marshal of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day program,” she said. “I do believe in service and in giving back. I am thankful for the honor.”

As for her parade plans, if the weather is agreeable, Kelly would like to walk as much of the route as possible.

“It’s going to depend on the weather,” she said. “Maybe I can do a walk-ride combination. If it is good weather, I would like to walk some of it.”
